How to spend 48 hours in Zurich, Switzerland
A little bit about my trip to Zurich.
Zurich was the second stop on our summer Euro road trip, and we spent two nights there before heading to a small town called Kandersteg to hike Oeschinensee (which was insane—post on that coming soon!).
I think 48 hours was the perfect amount of time in Zurich. It’s a big city with plenty to do, but compared to other major European spots, it has a much more chill, put-together vibe. It also was pretty expensive compared to our other stops, people told us Switzerland was expensive, but we didn’t quite believe them until we got there. We were there from Wednesday to Friday, and one thing that stood out was how early things shut down—definitely not the best place for wild nightlife, but perfect if you’re into a mix of old-city charm and bustling city life.
Some of my favorite pics from the trip!
My two day itinerary in Zurich, Switzerland
Like I mentioned above, we were there Wednesday - Friday in mid June. The weather was warm, but not as unbearable or humid as some other cities, so we spent a lot of time outside. It is a gorgeous city with parks, lakes, and great walkability. We walked to everywhere I mentioned below from out hotel. We also were on a little bit of a buget, nothing crazy, but Zurich was definitly at the top of our price range. Everywhere we went is fairly moderate price wise.
First, where to stay in Zurich
Since Zurich is on the pricier side, we decided to stay just outside the city center in Zurich-West. It was still super walkable to Old Town and the main attractions, plus we were pleasantly surprised by how many cute bars and restaurants were in the neighborhood itself. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option that’s still central and well-connected, I’d definitely recommend staying here!
But if you want to be right in the middle of everything, Old Town is where we spent most of our time. It has the best mix of shopping, bars, and restaurants, so if being in the heart of Zurich sounds more like your vibe, that’s going to be your best bet.
Day 1 Itinerary
We drove into Zurich and went straight to our hotel in Zurich-West. Since we didn’t have much planned for the day, the goal was simple: walk around, eat good food, and explore.
Head into Old Town, Zurich
After unpacking, we headed toward Old Town to grab something to eat. On the way there, we passed a few bars with really nice outdoor seating just outside the city center. One of them, Bar Basso, looked like a great spot, so we stopped for a quick afternoon drink (their food looked really good too). This area had a lot of great options, so it’s a good stop if you want a break before heading into Old Town.
Shopping and Swiss Chocolate Tasting
After, we continued our walk into the city center. Old Town was full of charming streets, historic buildings, and plenty of different shops, restaurant, and cafes. You really can spend a hours exploring, which is exactly what we did. We wandered around for a while, walked along the waterfront, and stopped to check out some stores. While we were there, we also grabbed Swiss chocolate from Läderach, which I’d definitely recommend. They cut it fresh and price it by weight, so you can try a mix of flavors. My favorite was the Raspberry-Blackberry White Chocolate—so good.
After this we stumbled upon the cutest bistro located in a small ally. It’s called Mont Martre and was small but very charming. We can a little too late for the food, but the menu looked good and they had great coffee. The service was also amazing and the waitres gave us many recommendations for local bars and restaurants around the area, they we checked out later in the night.
Drinks and Dinner in the Charming Streets of Old Town Zurich
We headed back to our hotel to get ready for dinner and rest before making our way back to Old Town. We didn’t have many plans and wanted something casual so we headed to a strip of bars and restaurant we had seen earlier that were also near a cocktail bar the was recommended to us. The bar we went to was called Vista Bar. It had a fun interior and great outdoor seating and good drinks. You can order food from the Italian Restarautn next door called Ristorante Toscano and they will bring it to your table at the bar. This is what we eneded up doing, as we didn’t relize many restaurants close earlier in Zurich then in some other European cities like Barcelona. After some food and drinks sitting out side enjoying the ambiance, we walked to a bar called Marea Cocktailbar, which the wiatess from earier recommended to us. This was my favorite drink spot we went to in Zurich, they had creative speciaty cocktails and an ashteitc but fun vibe. I would recomend going earlier in the night and seeing how busy it is as it was pretty packed when we went. We ended our night here, but did stop for a late night snack at Zurich Fried Chicken. Honestly, for late night after drinking food, it was pretty good if you are in the area.
This is how we spent our first day in Zurich; mostly just exploring and stopping when we saw something we wanted to check out. Out second day was much more structured.
Day 2 Itinerary
For our second day in Zurich, we had a bit more of a plan. After spending the first day exploring Old Town and doing some shopping, we wanted to check out the beauty of Lake Zurich and, of course, try some classic Swiss fondue. With those two things in mind, we put together a simple but perfect itinerary for our only full day in the city.
Picnic at Lake Zurich
We woke up to a perfect sunny morning, which was ideal for our plans of having a lakeside picnic. After grabbing coffee near our hotel, we stopped at a grocery store along the way to pick up some picnic eats. Zurich is on the pricier side, so this was a great way to save some money instead of eating out (highly recommend if you’re looking for budget-friendly options). We grabbed croissants, cheese, fruit, meats, and drinks, then headed to The Arboretum, a lakeside park known for its open green spaces and stunning views.
The area was full of locals sunbathing, swimming, and going for walks, and was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery. We found the perfect spot to lay out our spread, enjoy the food, and just take in the lakeside view. I think that this is the perfect relaxing way to start your day in Zurich.
Take a Boat Ride Around the Lake
After our picnic, we walked along the waterfront and noticed small boats available for rent. It was such a beautiful day that we couldn’t pass up the chance to get out on the lake. We found a rental spot called Bootsvermietung Enge, which had different types of boats available by the hour at a pretty reasonable price.
We ended up renting a small motorboat for around 50-60 euros for an hour, and it was totally worth it. No boating license needed, and the staff was super helpful. Seeing Zurich from the water was such a unique way to experience the city, plus there was a ladder on the boat, so we were able to jump in and swim in the lake. If you have some extra time, I’d 100% recommend doing this.
Afterward, we checked out a few shops near the lake and made our way back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.
Head to a Swiss Fondue Restaurant for Dinner
One of our must-do’s in Zurich was trying authentic Swiss fondue, but since we visited in the summer, we quickly learned that fondue is traditionally a winter dish, so it wasn’t as easy to find. After asking around and doing some research, we landed on Swiss Chuchi at Hotel Adler in Old Town. Yes, it’s a little touristy, but the food was great, and the atmosphere was really nice—we sat outside overlooking a cozy plaza, which made for a great dining experience.
If you eat here, just keep in mind that each person has to order a main dish. I went with a traditional fondue (which came with vegetables and bread for dipping), and my boyfriend ordered their schnitzel. Both were really good, and for Zurich prices, it was a good amount for the cost—each dish was around 35-40 euros. If you’re visiting in the summer but still want to check Swiss fondue off your list, this is a good option!
Overall, day two was relaxing, but still full of adventure and exploring the gorgeous city. If you’re visiting in the summer, I’d highly recommend doing a mix of outdoor activities and exploring Old Town to get the best of both worlds!
